Background
Nearly twenty years ago, someone asked me,
“Who you be?”
I answered lightly at first:
“I run a small business,” I said.
She met my words with stone-cold eyes.
“No,” she said,
and repeated the question,
“Who you be?”
I was stumped.
How could I not know who I was?
Today, I offer a response.
Who I Be
We are not shaped by circumstance,
nor bound by history,
nor confined by expectation.
We are defined by choice.
I choose kindness. I am kind.
I choose reflection. I am wise.
I choose connection. I am one with the universe.
I choose — and therefore, I am.
Nearly twenty years later, I finally know who I be.
I am who I choose to be —
kind, wise, and in harmony.
